Athirappilly, the enchanting falls in Kerala, are often referred to as the Niagara Falls of India. It is situated on the Chalakudy river, which originates in the upper reaches of the Western Ghats They come falling down from a height of 80 feet. This area is the only place in the Western Ghats where four endangered Hornbill species are seen.

The beauty and fury of Athirappilly waterfalls are at the best during monsoon season when it attains 400 feet width and falls 80 feet. Kerala has two rainy seasons. The Southwest Monsoon that arrives in the begining of June or end of May is called 'Edavappathy'. The secondis Northeast Monsoon starts in the mid October and is called 'Thulavarsham'.
